a tale of human grace and the power of prayer
The work began with the elemental incision carved through the landscape by the river.
Though far from our imagination when we began the piece, the river came to symbolise the client’s father, such was his presence at the castle.
Every mark within the piece, each scratch and tear can be traced back to a moment in time within those few days in Scotland. The marks we cast, exactly as we cast them will never appear again within the grounds of the castle, yet they are archived within layers of metal within the artwork.
The burn which dissects the castle’s grounds, depicted as an ink stroke back in the Based Upon Studio.
On location in Scotland and in the Based Upon studio: the river revealed its unique colours, flavoured as it is by the Highland peat.
In the Based Upon Studio, stones and rocks collected from the river bed were shaved to create flecks of light within our hand carved river bed.
Casting the hands of all those that had worked the land over the past twenty years and of the family who lived there; the sense of the client's Father had permeated the hearts and stories of all of those that lived and worked there.
Hand ground stones taken from the river were used to re-cast a treasured possession. A memento mori.
Leaves, branches and bark were collected from the estate’s woodlands and moulded to make textural marks within the piece back in the studio.
